Janardhana Temple
The Temple is 2000 years old; it is dedicated to the God Vishnu. The history tells that the original temple was gobbled up and destroyed by torrents. Years later, king Pandyan came on the site to make redemption for Brahma for a sin which he had committed. The Lord forgave king and in exchange would have asked to king to build another temple on the same site. The history says that in a dream he was informed about the place of the original idol which was profoundly lying in sea. By means of the fishermen, king resumed the idol in the temple. The legend also says that Brahma appeared and finished the rites. The non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the internal sanctuary of the temple, but it is authorized to walk around the sanctuary and the enormous banyan tree. The festivals of the temple are colored with shrill parades.
Papanasam Beach is a beach of Varkala Arabia Sea. ‘Papanasam’ means: wash away the sins. It is believed that immersion in waters of the Papanasam beach washes all the sins.
There is a red cliff perched along the coast of Varkala. It is the only place in the southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea.
These cliffs form a geologic characteristic on the coast of otherwise flat Kerala; it is known among the geologists that the forming of Varkala is a monument geologic such as declared by the geologic Committee of India.
A mineral spring springs from the cliff in the south extremity of the beach it is famous for its medicinal properties.
Paradise for sun bath and swimming, beach of Papanasam is known at the same moment for the leisure activities and for the religious reasons

The setting of this Beach is striking enough to take your breath away, with a long winding stretch of cliff and views that extend over the Arabian Sea. A paved footpath runs along the length of the cliff, bordered by coconut palms, quaint shops, beach shacks, hotels, and guest houses. Nestled at the bottom of the cliff is a long stretch of sparkling beach, reached by steps leading down from the cliff top. The outside of restaurants are a pleasant rest place in a day of walk and bathing.
The picturesque beaches of Varkala are a peaceful shopping place. The aesthetics of these landscapes of red sand and cliffs is rather striking.
One of the beaches of the North Cliff is made by black sand, this color is due in it volcanic rock which composes it.
During the monsoon the sea floods the beach. Then it is possible to walk by the paved path which goes along the cliff, lined with coconut palms and which leads to the beach of Kappil where we can appreciate the sandy beach between sea and lake.

A myth attached to this temple as well as the island, says that this was supposed to be the island where the Travancore's royal ladies used to hide their jewels and ornaments.
